Welcome To VLAN Configuration, VLAN - Virtual Local Area Network allows to split a single Large lan into multiple small Vlans.

Steps To Create VLAN

1. Vlan Database

2. Access Mode

3.Trunk Mode

Step 1:


Vlan Database

  • Collection of VLAN information

  • Vlan No. Starts from 1 to 1005

  • Vlan No.1 is a default Vlan

  • Vlan No.2 to 1001 is a management Vlan

  • Vlan No.1002 to 1005 is a reserved Vlan


Syntax to create a Vlan Database



  • Switch>enable

  • Switch#vlan database

  • Switch(vlan)#vlan <no> name <anyname>

  • Switch(vlan)#exit


To verify Vlan Database



  • Switch#show vlan brief


Step 2:


Access Mode

  • Connection between Switch to End devices

  • Bandwidth in 10 or 100 Mbps

  • By default all Ports are Member of Vlan 1

  • It Carry single Vlan information


End Devices --> PC, Server, Ip phone, Camera, Printer,


Syntax to create Access Mode

  • Switch>enable

  • Switch#config t

  • Switch(config)#interface fastEthernet <port no>

  • Switch(config-if)#switchport mode access

  • Switch(config-if)#switchport access vlan <no>

  • Switch(config-if)#exit


To Verify



  • Switch#show vlan brief


Step 3:


Trunk Mode

  • Connection between Networking Devices

  • Bandwidth Must be in 100Mbps

  • It carry two or more Vlan information

  • Two Types of trunk modes 802.1q and ISL


Networking Device --> Router to Switch & Switch to Switch



Syntax to create Trunk Mode



  • Switch>enable

  • Switch#config t

  • Switch(config)#interface fastEthernet <portno>

  • Switch(config-if)#switchport mode trunk

  • Switch(config-if)#switchport trunk allowed vlan all

  • Switch(config-if)#exit


To Verify Trunk:



  • Switch#show interfaces trunk

Creating Lan


For Creating Lan we need a Switch and PC

PC1 --- ip 192.168.10.1   255.255.255.0

Pc2 --- ip 192.168.10.2   255.255.255.0

Pc3 --- ip 192.168.10.3   255.255.255.0

Pc4 --- ip 192.168.10.4   255.255.255.0

Switch --- Cisco Catalyst 2950

cables used Twisted Pair Straight-trough to connect between Switch to PC

then we try to ping between the pc means it will success....

Creating Vlan
